Human Need Demands More Technology

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs model is all about that simplest human need: improving the standard of living from where it is to something better. History tells us that improving the standard of living means improving economic productivity. Improving economic productivity means more technology: more automation, more robotics, more artificial intelligence. Looking at the trends of several key factors tells us that the need for productivity-improving technology is becoming ever more crucial.

One key factor is the aging of populations around the world (Exhibit 10.1). The populations of many cities, sub-nation states, and nations (especially those with higher standards of living) are aging because birth rates are declining and expected lifetimes are increasing.
